Catholic broadcast group honors Beyond Our Control

UNDA-USA. the professional and autonomous Catholic association for broadcasters and allied communicators, has selected Beyond Our Control as a winner in its l2th annual Gabriel Awards competition, according to Joseph Dundon, an account executive at WNDU and adviser to the Junior Achievement-sponsored show.

The award, for the top youth-oriented local television program in markets ranking smaller than number 25, will be presented tonight at a program in Phoenix, Ariz. Dennis Laughlin, WNDU ad director and also a BOC adviser, will accept the Gabriel in memory of David A. Williams, one of the program's first advisers and its producer for the last 10years, who died last summer.

The Gabriel Awards honor persons in the broadcast industry whose work creatively treats issues concerning human values. Entries are based on artistic, informational and technical criteria.

The Gabriel judges described Be yond Our Control as "visual energy and creativity befitting the young.... A skillful use of overkill with punch and not a little gusto."

The Junior Achievement Television Co. was founded in 1960 by Wm. Thomas Hamilton, executive vice president and general manager of the WNDU stations. Beyond Our Control currently is taping its 11th season, to be aired beginning early next year.

*Note from Joe Dundon: Re: the "Gabriel": I know that Denny went to Phoenix, I think, to pick it up, not Dave. So that would put it after Aug. 77. And I don't think it was '78 or later. He had a great story about his return trip. As his carry-on bag went through the X-Ray machine, the examiner looked up and asked him "Whatcha got in there, the Holy Ghost?"
