Alumnus Brings

National Recognition

to JA Company

Most younger alumni will remember junior Achievement as an activity of one's junior and senior years in which students, with the advice of representatives of various Boston businesses, formed companies and learned the basics of doing business in the American economic system. For the vast majority of those who participated in "JA," graduation from BLS brought an end to any affiliation with the program. However, for Joseph K. Dundon '61 such was not the case.
Joe, who received both the B.A. and B.S. from Notre Dame, has for the last seven years been an adviser to a JA company sponsored by WNDUTV, the NBC affiliate in South Bend, for which Joe is an advertising accountant executive. This company of 30 students from area high schools produces a 13 week series.

From modest beginnings some years ago, "Beyond Our Control" has grown to be a very popular local program in the Indiana/Michigan area in which it is seen, and, more recently, has received considerable national recognition. In addition to winning the Washington Honor Medal of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge in 1973 and 1974, earlier this year

the show was named the nation's best locally-produced variety show in its market class by the National Association of Television Program Executives. The impressive aspect of this award is that "Beyond Our Control" was not competing against other student-run programs. It was up against professionally produced programs which had much larger budgets and, at least on paper, much greater possibilities of success.

What's next for Joe and his creative group ... an Emmy Award?

"I ran across this while rummaging through some old files. The Latin School Bulletin story was a bit of an inside job. The editor at the time was (is) my best friend from BLS. He was out for a Notre Dame Football game, and I brought him to a Saturday a.m. taping at the station. The answer to his concluding question could be "A Gold hugo". And I still chuckle when I se pics of me in that sportcoat. I think it was green too...bright green!"
